HYMN 9

When the Sun rose, the service
of the lamps was finished.
They passed away. Types
and symbols ceased.
When the invisible
circumcision was accomplished,
then the visible
circumcision was abolished.

Glory to the First-born,
Christ, the Anointed One

Moses' books were unfulfilled
they were waiting for the Gospels.
All the ancient
symbols took to flight
and came to rest in Christ.

Glory to the First-born,
Christ, the Anointed One

For Moses' law could not contain
the mighty torrent of His symbols in
the small space given to priests and kings.

Glory to the First-born,
Christ, the Anointed One

Those who maintain
that the types and symbols
of Scripture are waiting
one yet to arise
show they are blind;
their shame is clear
when Christ is there
in front of their eyes.

Glory to the First-born,
Christ, the Anointed One

The blind go astray, for the river
of symbols flows from what
had gone before Him to Him, but,
since He has received it all, it cannot
go on to another.

Glory to the First-born,
Christ, the Anointed One

Since the space of the community
of righteous men was still
too small, the river flows
on past, until
its flow is stopped because
it meets the Sea.

Glory to the First-born,
Christ, the Anointed One

The river of symbols
cannot cut a path
through the Sea to go
to another; it is all
swallowed up in Its Enormity,

Glory to the First-born,
Christ, the Anointed One

which is a wondrous Expanse
that could not be filled
by all the creatures
of the world;
It is not a part of, but It holds
the Universe.

Glory to the First-born,
Christ, the Anointed One

The prophets poured their
wonderful symbols into It.
Priests and kings too
gave It their types.
All of them entered
their images, as in
a poetic competition.

Glory to the First-born,
Christ, the Anointed One

and Christ was the victor, explaining the similes,
interpreting the images
He is the Sea that receives
all the rivers in the world.

Glory to the First-born,
Christ, the Anointed One

Consider this:
if all the kings
in the world conspired
to stop the rivers
running to the sea,
the rivers would still
force their way through,
so great is their longing,
so great their need.

Glory to the First-born,
Christ, the Anointed One

And so the Sea is Christ, and He can receive
all the sources and the springs and the rivers and the streams
that pour out of the Scriptures.

Glory to the First-born,
Christ, the Anointed One

The little holes where
the river gathers as it passes will be jealous
of the Sea, for they
can never hope to receive
the river entire.

Glory to the First-born,
Christ, the Anointed One

And again, to whomsoever
you might hope to turn the Scripture,
he will be unable
in himself to assemble
all the images and symbols.

Glory to the First-born,
Christ, the Anointed One

For it is Christ alone
Who, by His Cross, renders
all the symbols perfect, by His Body all
the types, and all its splendours
by His Beauty;
every part of it surrenders
all its mystery to Him.

Glory to the First-born,
Christ, the Anointed One
